Clara's Name

Before she grows too much more, I wanted to write a bit about the name we chose for our fourth child.

We chose Biblical names for the first three and initially combed through Biblical names in search of another for Clara. We couldn't agree on one we really liked, though (Jeremy shot down Phoebe every time I brought it up! Can you believe it? And we both had moved away from our like of Chloe . . .).

So we considered virtue names, but ran into problems--we didn't like the common ones for a first name (Faith, Grace, etc.); we were hesitant to choose a name that repeated another child's first initial (Joy); we liked some unusual ones, but figured they might be too far out there and wouldn't fit with the style of names we'd already established (Verity); others we liked alright but not enough to use as names for our child, at least right now (Mercy, Hope).

I proposed Clara as a name early on, but Jeremy wasn't sure. Initially he liked Claire/Clare better. (And he again proposed Natalie--pretty, but not a name I'd use, unless perhaps she was a Christmas baby--but even then, probably not. Plus, I want to avoid names that alliterate with our last name.) I hoped to erode his opposition and brought up Clara as an option frequently. We studied baby name sites, looked at Social Security lists and statistics, read through lists of most popular names by year, etc.

In the end, we circled back to Clara. Eventually we decided we liked the name lots--enough to break from our precedent of Biblical names. But we opted for a Biblical and family name for her middle name: Elisabeth.

Clara is a feminization of the Latin clarus, meaning "clear, bright, famous." Elisabeth means "oath/promise of God." So together Clara Elisabeth's name means "clear (or bright or famous) promise of God." In her we clearly see the goodness of God and His promises and the beauty of His blessing of children. We hope she will grow up to illuminate His good promises brightly and clearly to the world.

We chose Elisabeth as her middle name for several reasons. Obviously, we like the name. It's Biblical, even if her first name isn't. And--as with each of our children--it honors various family members. Most closely, Elisabeth is my sister's first name and Jeremy's sister's middle name (Anna Elizabeth). So Clara is named for two of her aunts. Elizabeth was also the middle name of one of Jeremy's maternal great-grandmothers (Grandma Marie) and the first name of one of my paternal great-grandmothers (Grandma Bessie). I know my maternal line has several Pennsylvania Dutch women with Elisabetha in their names, too. So Clara Elisabeth is a name of rich and recent history!

I like the softer Germanic (is that an oxymoron?) spelling with the "s," and in choosing this spelling we also wanted to honor a great woman of God who passed away this year that Clara was born: Elisabeth Elliot.

Of course, Clara's middle name is also (primarily, should I say?) after the Biblical Elizabeth, who believed God's promise to give her a son in her old age: who carried the prophet who prepared the way for his cousin, Jesus.

I've been thinking much of that Elizabeth and her cousin Mary this Christmas, as I hold a new babe and wonder at their faith, joy, trust, and sorrow as they birthed and nursed and taught and raised their sons--both of whom fulfilled the prophecies and good promises of God to us. May Clara grow up to be a woman of God like her namesake!

Winter Walk

We've had a week of cold days--freezing temperatures at night, frost on the grass in the mornings, brisk winds, and even rain to make it feel like we're truly in December. Neighborhood trees yellowed a few weeks ago and have lost most of their leaves in the recent wind and rain. The other morning Lydia ate ice shards from some containers that collected rainwater.

The crisp weather reminds me of fall days in Pennsylvania, when a friend and I would put aside homework to take long walks around the neighborhoods and out along the cornfields near GCC.

We bundled up our little troupe for a neighborhood walk on Saturday. Jeremy thought he was tough enough to brave the cold in shorts and a tee-shirt, but he regretted his decision by the time we got home.

The kids never tire of seeing people's Christmas decorations and lights. (Unfortunately they also want to touch all yard decorations and don't have a sense of private property.)

Lydia imitated one of the magi in folding her hands and bowing toward baby Jesus

They enjoyed splashing in puddles, chasing each other, running up and down the sidewalks, etc. They were especially interested in the irrigation apparatus we passed.

They also loved swinging on a neighbor's swing. Josiah obliged Lydia with a few good pushes.

Poor, sensitive Lydia was heartbroken over Abby's refusal to hold her hand at one point . . .

But they made up their differences and were quite sweet to each other part of the time . . .

We love these kids of ours!

Thanksgiving

 Clara and the crowd

We hosted a late Thanksgiving celebration--the first Thanksgiving we've had in Phoenix! Usually we go to Flagstaff to spend a long weekend with Jeremy's family and take our annual trek into the forest to pick and cut a Christmas tree. But this year Jeremy's parents spent Thanksgiving in Los Angeles with his grandparents; Em and James went to Paulden to be with the Bauerles; and Justin had to work Thanksgiving day . . . So Anna and Justin planned to come down Saturday through Monday to celebrate with us. At the last minute, Daniel and Lauren decided to join us, too! So we had a full house (my mom was also here) and lots of fun.

Kezzie was much happier with her new cousin than she looks here :)

D and Lauren came Friday. They were a great help entertaining the kids while we cooked and baked! Anna, Justin, and Kezzie arrived around lunchtime on Saturday, and we all ate our Thanksgiving meal late that afternoon. My mom orchestrated and cooked much of the menu (I often had to abandon the kitchen to nurse). Anna brought a pie and some other treats, and Daniel and Lauren picked up last-minute items and were generally helpful. We enjoyed a nice feast!

All the girls with pony tails in their hair!

Most of all, though, we enjoyed time with everyone. I like having family stay overnight so we adults can get some uninterrupted time to talk and play games after the kids go to bed. We played several rounds of Hand and Foot Canasta this time!

The kids loved playing the uncles, aunts, and Kezzie. (Now they're eagerly anticipating Christmas with everyone!) Kezzie loved Baby Clara but felt a bit smothered by her older cousins (notably Lydia). Josiah understands a bit better about personal space, and he and Kezzie get a kick out of each other. It's fun to see them laughing together.

Anna did our girls' hair before church on Sunday. They looked so grown-up!

We took the kids to a local park on Sunday afternoon, and everyone else went hiking up at the Piestewa Peak preserve on Monday morning (I stayed home with Clara). Our kids pulled some crazy stunts with their bikes at the park . . . and we narrowly avoided several accidents involving the pond.

 Ready, set, . . .

Go! Uncle Justin rolled down as our kids coasted on their bikes :)
