Ride 'em, Cowgirls

The girls vie for a chance to ride Josiah's rocking horse (made by Grandpa Scott for Jeremy when he was a little boy!), and once atop the steed, they attempt daredevil antics--no hands, standing up, flipping off, etc. Between my work at keeping them semi-safe, I took some pictures of them the other day. (Not pictured is the unlucky girl who has to wait her turn, usually trying to drag Sister off the horse, bugging Mama with whining about unfairness, or melting into a tantrum on the floor.)

Elias and Flagstaff

Emily sent me some pictures from our time in Flagstaff, so here are a few more of our favorite nephew.

Aunt Naomi and "little 'Lias"

I'm so glad he likes to cuddle

Emily said this was Elias being "slain in the spirit," with help from Josiah :)

Can you tell Josiah is pretty happy about his cousin?

While we were up in Flagstaff, James offered to take some family pictures for us. I'm not one to pass up an opportunity to get some pictures all together, especially with James' skills! So here are the results (the kids were tired and antsy, and even on a good day they don't do a great job looking at the camera or sitting still . . .). Thank you, James!

Grandma Days

Grandma Dortha had meetings down here in Phoenix last week, so she stayed with us for a few days. All of us enjoyed having her around. We even went to the zoo one morning with her! (I didn't take the camera--so no pictures of that.) Here's Grandma with the three crazies in the backyard.

Two of Abby's Favorite Things

Our little Abby is such a sweetheart and a stinker all in one! Lately she's trying to speak more words, but she also effectively communicates with sounds, pointing, screeching, scratches, and all the rest that not-yet-verbal toddlers quickly master. Today she said "hat" (without the "t"), and regularly wanted to wear either her yellow sunhat or Josiah's baseball cap from Daddy (too big for him, way too big for her).

But on to the title of this post: two things Abby loves lately are  . . .

baby dolls! and . . .

this particular plastic spoon!

She sometimes carries around her spoon for the better part of the day. She likes to try to use it during mealtime, when she'll place pieces of food on it and attempt to get them into her mouth, usually only with partial success. But that trusty spoon travels much further afield with Abby, too. She likes to dig in the dirt outside with it, pretend to feed Mama with it, poke the couch and putz around the living room with it . . . and her siblings invoke her wrath when they try to get it away from her. When she's cranky after waking from a nap, I can quickly perk her up with mention of her spoon--granted that we find it soon after I mention it.

Both girls like baby dolls these days, but Abby is entertained longer by them. She hugs her dolls, pats them on the back, and generally tries to be sweet to them. She does poke at their eyes, and she sometimes carries them upside-down, but always with the best of intentions.

Sunday Evening Gardening

Last Saturday we took a family trip to the local nursery and bought some plants, and then Sunday evening we planted our tomatoes, cucumbers, and butternut squash seedlings. We had some other plants already started from seed, so our summer garden is mostly set! We just hope it grows. . . .

March temperatures have been above average so far, but they've made for beautiful evenings. The kids are enjoying the yard so much, though we still have to keep Lydia and Abby from eating dirt and rocks. Here are some pictures of the three of them last Sunday evening--all trying to "help" Daddy with the garden, in their own way!

Josiah loves to climb the ladder whenever he gets permission to do so!

Cauliflower Queen

We tried a winter garden this year, with mixed success. Our broccoli and cauliflower plants grew big and beautiful, but the heads didn't really develop--we just had many little sprigs of broccoli and cauliflower, some of which shot to flower too soon, some of which shriveled up, and some of which we ate. This past weekend we put in our summer garden, and so we pulled up most of the broccoli and cauliflower plants. Josiah liked plucking and eating the broccoli for the past few weeks, but Lydia enjoyed the last of the cauliflower. She's a good poster-child for our garden produce, even if it wasn't all that successful or bountiful in reality!

Abby shunned even a taste of the cauliflower, so Lydia had it mostly to herself--minus a couple bites from Big Brother
