Two Funny Girls

These girls are on the move, and they love being together (for the most part)!

Two and a half!

Sunday was our little buddy's half birthday! He's growing up too fast already. But of course, I wouldn't wish him any younger than he is--I can't imagine Josiah as any other than my friendly, hard-working, book-loving, barefoot, energetic, entertaining, sometimes sweet, often challenging two-and-a-half-year-old guy. He's learning so much every day. I love his spontaneous politeness: "T'anks, Mama!" or "'Scuse me!" I love his eagerness to greet his sisters with a big grin after naptime. I love to hear him say, "C'mon Lee-ya! C'mon Abby! Come play!" I love that he wants "one more song" and "five bear-hugs" at bedtime. I love his delight in the outdoors (especially dirt and crickets and lizards). I love his desire to help--"'Siah do work!" he often says. I love his sweet voice singing little made-up songs (today it was about "poky" and "punkins" during our bike ride). I love overhearing his games of pretend with his "guys." Oh, I could go on and on. Being Mom to this little boy is lots of hard work, but it's also such a privilege and a joy. God has certainly given me a good gift in Josiah.

A Chair Adventure

The girls love to be near Josiah, even just after he hurt them and is sitting in his chair in time out as a consequence. They scurry over toward him and pull up on a nearby chair. Unfortunately, the Ikea chairs we own aren't too heavy or sturdy--so they often fall over or on the girls. Lydia got stuck in an overturned chair one day last week (whether she pulled it down or Big Brother pushed it down, I don't know) and then had a bit of consternation trying to get out. She figured it out in the end!

Pumpkin

On the way home from Flagstaff, Josiah was tired and cranky and had a half-hour meltdown when we pulled off to nurse the girls next to a pumpkin field. Daddy took him out to look at the field, thinking this would help cheer him up. Unfortunately Josiah got the idea that we could take a couple pumpkins home, so the meltdown started anew. "Siah want pumpkin!" he cried. Then he wanted noodles. And Grandma. And he didn't want his shoes on, and he was cold, and he wanted Mama to hold him, but then he didn't, and he wanted to know where the pumpkin farmer was (we told him he was probably eating dinner--this stuck in his head and he asked if he was eating noodles the rest of the evening). On and on went the hysterics. Finally we got him semi-composed and set out again. We pulled into Phoenix around 7 p.m. or so and stopped by Trader Joe's for a few essentials for supper and breakfast the next morning. I humored Josiah and bought a pumpkin and noodles. He had so much fun with that pumpkin the next couple days! Finally he and Daddy carved it and lit a candle it in. He was impressed with the whole process. So here are some pictures of the pumpkin fun . . .

Serious about his pumpkin! The girls were interested, too.

Josiah loved using his toy knife on the pumpkin! He also loved rolling it off the couch or table and bouncing it like a ball, but we had to put a stop to this, since the pumpkin started splitting.

Girls and play food

I have a couple more funny stories about Josiah to share, and nowhere better to post them than with this set of pictures. So here you go!

1. Uncle D taught Josiah what it means to "shoot" things--so now instead of "spraying," Josiah likes to say he's "shooting" everything. I knew it would inevitably come at some point. Yesterday he pointed his hammer at me and said, "Shoot Mama!" I told him no, we don't shoot people. So then he said, "Shoot Daddy!" I said, "No, Daddy is a person, too." Then he tried "Shoot Lydia!" and on down the line of Abby, Uncle Justin, Aunt Anna, and Grandma. I told him these were all people, and that Josiah was a person, too. And we don't shoot people. He seemed to think the information about everyone being a person was interesting, but he objected pretty strongly to himself being a person. In response to me saying, "Josiah is a person, too," he replied, "NO!" Siah not a person." Even as I write this he's sitting in his chair in the kitchen calling out to me, "Siah not a person, Mama! Not a person!"

2. Josiah likes to run laps through the kitchen, laundry "room," living room, and dining area. He pretends he's in a band sometimes, playing a tuba. Other times he's "skating"--he says, "Set, GO!" and takes off, pretending to skate on the tile floor. Yesterday as he ran his laps, he started saying in an authoritative voice, "Forty days and forty nights! Forty days and forty nights!" I believe he got this Biblical reference from our frequent reading of various versions of Noah's ark.

The Problems of Mobility

Abby's not the only one moving fast these days--she has an older brother and sister, too! Lydia tends to get in more awkward situations than Abby does, perhaps partly because she's more adventurous. Both girls love to push or pull up on everything. They like to walk by pushing boxes and bins. And they don't always opt to go around obstacles. Lydia's choice to go over the toy food container got her in a bit of a predicament the other day, since she got stuck on top of it  . . . and was too funny not to take a few pictures of:

"Come on, Mom! Quit taking pictures and rescue me already!"

Happy to be off and climbing on Mama instead!

Speaking of Lydia, she's doing plenty of new things these days, too! She waves "bye" or "hi" (sometimes she needs a little prompting), and I think she actually means "Dada" when she says "Dada" now. She often repeats "mama" and "baba" and "dada" after me when I ask her to. While this stage of mobility means I must keep a keener eye on the girls, I think eight months is such a fun age!

Abby on the Move

Our little Abby has pulled ahead of her sister in achieving a few milestones. I think I mentioned her tooth before (Lydia still doesn't have one, which is a good thing, since she's a bit of a biter already!). She's also mastered crawling before Lydia, who still mainly sticks with a speedy army maneuver. Abby pulls up on everything and is fine-tuning her ability to get down after getting up. She usually pushes off and sits down hard. If she falls or loses balance, she does a pretty good job of rolling with the fall to protect herself. Despite her best efforts, though, she has plenty of bumps and bruises. Lydia seems to have more trouble than Abby in figuring out how to get down after standing up--unless she inadvertently falls. Abby is now confident enough to hold onto her support with just one hand, and she's starting to cruise rather than stay in one place. Occasionally she looks ready to let go altogether and just stand on her own! I'm sure that will happen before we know it.
