Yes, that's "sitting," not "spitting." (Josiah still does more of the latter than the former. On an evening trip to Trader Joe's this past week, he spit up in Jeremy's hair, as Jer likes to carry him on his shoulders, and Josiah loves the easy access to hair. He's a hair grabber and eater . . . and spitter.)
But back to sitting--apparently those back and stomach muscles are developing well! Josiah can sit without support for a little while, now. Typically he throws himself off balance when he gets greedy and tries to reach for something just a bit too far away. I took the pictures below during the last week of September in our backyard one morning (before it got too hot). Josiah enjoyed lying around, chewing on his teething ring, and watching the leaves.
Then I sat him up to try to catch the sitting action. He often leans forward and balances with his hands (usually while trying to grab at his toes). But more and more often he's sitting up straighter and using his arms--and able to stay up.
The big attraction: grass.
He discovered grass is pickable--and probably edible, if Mama hadn't gotten it out of his hands before he could get it into his mouth. He was very interested in the grass and thus not very interested in sitting, since he could more effectively pick grass if he toppled himself forward off the towel. But isn't he CUTE?!
